Welcome to Slow Food SW Washington

Healthy, delicious food is important to you. You know we need to make our food system more sustainable, and you just know that fresh, local food is simply where it's at for a quality meal. And it doesn't hurt that eating locally helps support our local economy and uses less energy than buying food from afar. What else can you do to act locally when it comes to eating? Well, we hope you'll join us here at Slow Food, as thousands of Americans have, and help us create a good, clean, and fair food system in this country--starting right here at home. Slow Food SW Washington is alive and growing, and we'd love to see you at our next event. All are welcome at all Slow Food SW WA Events

Well, my fellow SW Washington slow foodies, Spring has sprung! I'm Stephani, your local convivium chair, and I'd like to invite you to join us at upcoming Slow Food SW Washington events. In 2010, I'd like to continue with our primary mission of connecting local consumers (that's eaters like me) with our local growers, producers gatherers--all those folks who provide our delicious local foods! On that note...
Please join us for our next Event--an informational CSA Fair on April 18th!

Our convivium includes lots of families with small children, so I'd also like to focus some of our efforts in 2010 on issues that affect our kids. For example, Slow Food USA's Time For Lunch campaign takes aim at school lunches, making sure that legislators and schools do all we can to provide safe, healthy, and delicious food in schools. The new Child Nutrition Act, introduced by Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark), is moving through Congress now. Many feel that the bill does not go far enough in providing adequate funding for healthy food in schools when nearly a third of our country's children are overweight or obese. Now is the time to contact our legislators. Check out the "Local Resources" page for more links about this legislation and efforts by Michelle Obama and others to shape the future. Please contact me if you have ideas about how to approach this in our community, whether you are a parent, teacher, farmer or school administrator.

What kind of Slow Food events would you like to see in your community? Please join us and get involved. Check out our Local Resources page, and please send me your suggestions for other links you'd like to share there. As you embrace the awakening of the Pacific NW spring, make Slow Food part of your plans. With your help, we can grow our local movement.

Thanks! to Slow Food SW Washington members Melinda Walters and Matthew Logan who graciously hosted our February soup party. We all shared some cozy delicious bowls of soup and even took some home to get us through that last little bit of winter. A good time was had by all, particularly the kids, who got the special treat of roasting marshmallows over our little "campfire" for dessert.
