Our June Speaker:
Jeff Mocniak of Melchemy Craft Mead
Jeffrey Mocniak is co-founder and mazer of Melchemy Craft Mead, a local honey winery located in the Columbia River Gorge. He and his business partner Tim O’Malley have spent the past three years working tirelessly to get the meadery up and running and producing seasonal and artisanal meads to distribute locally. Jeffrey will share insights and lessons from this journey as well as intentions the founders have for the direction of the business. From humble beginnings as a homebrewer, beekeeper, herbalist, and activist, Jeffrey will speak to the challenges around beginning a business based on a set of principles informed by an attempt to live sustainably upon and in reciprocal relationship to a local land base. He will discuss a low-budget approach to entrepreneurship, the process of taking part in producing a product from source ingredients to sales, ideas around worker-ownership, collaborations with non-profit organizations, and partnerships with other local businesses to cross-pollinate and promote. Jeffrey will also touch upon the challenges of beekeeping, his participation in a forest service collaborative, and beginning an intentional community and how a local business is integral to that process.
